    ACCISS study rationale and design: activating collaborative cancer information service support for cervical cancer screening

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>High-quality cancer information resources are available but underutilized by the public. Despite greater awareness of the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Information Service among low-income African Americans and Hispanics compared with Caucasians, actual Cancer Information Service usage is lower than expected, paralleling excess cancer-related morbidity and mortality for these subgroups. The proposed research examines how to connect the Cancer Information Service to low-income African-American and Hispanic women and their health care providers. The study will examine whether targeted physician mailing to women scheduled for colposcopy to follow up an abnormal Pap test can increase calls to the Cancer Information Service, enhance appropriate medical follow-up, and improve satisfaction with provider-patient communication.</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>The study will be conducted in two clinics in ethnically diverse low-income communities in Chicago. During the formative phase, patients and providers will provide input regarding materials planned for use in the experimental phase of the study. The experimental phase will use a two-group prospective randomized controlled trial design. African American and Hispanic women with an abnormal Pap test will be randomized to Usual Care (routine colposcopy reminder letter) or Intervention (reminder plus provider recommendation to call the Cancer Information Service and sample questions to ask). Primary outcomes will be: 1) calls to the Cancer Information Service; 2) timely medical follow-up, operationalized by whether the patient keeps her colposcopy appointment within six months of the abnormal Pap; and 3) patient satisfaction with provider-patient communication at follow-up.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>The study examines the effectiveness of a feasible, sustainable, and culturally sensitive strategy to increase awareness and use of the Cancer Information Service among an underserved population. The goal of linking a public service (the Cancer Information Service) with real-life settings of practice (the clinics), and considering input from patients, providers, and Cancer Information Service staff, is to ensure that the intervention, if proven effective, can be incorporated into existing care systems and sustained. The approach to study design and planning is aimed at bridging the gap between research and practice/service.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p>NCT00873288</p

    The ABC130 barrel module prototyping programme for the ATLAS strip tracker

    For the Phase-II Upgrade of the ATLAS Detector, its Inner Detector, consisting of silicon pixel, silicon strip and transition radiation sub-detectors, will be replaced with an all new 100 % silicon tracker, composed of a pixel tracker at inner radii and a strip tracker at outer radii. The future ATLAS strip tracker will include 11,000 silicon sensor modules in the central region (barrel) and 7,000 modules in the forward region (end-caps), which are foreseen to be constructed over a period of 3.5 years. The construction of each module consists of a series of assembly and quality control steps, which were engineered to be identical for all production sites. In order to develop the tooling and procedures for assembly and testing of these modules, two series of major prototyping programs were conducted: an early program using readout chips designed using a 250 nm fabrication process (ABCN-25) and a subsequent program using a follow-up chip set made using 130 nm processing (ABC130 and HCC130 chips). This second generation of readout chips was used for an extensive prototyping program that produced around 100 barrel-type modules and contributed significantly to the development of the final module layout.     A Gammaherpesvirus MicroRNA Targets EWSR1 (Ewing Sarcoma Breakpoint Region 1) In Vivo To Promote Latent Infection of Germinal Center B Cells

    Gammaherpesviruses, including the human pathogens Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), directly contribute to the genesis of multiple types of malignancies. In vivo, these viruses infect B cells and manipulate B cell biology to establish lifelong infection. To accomplish this, gammaherpesviruses employ an array of gene products, including miRNAs, short noncoding RNAs that bind to and repress protein synthesis from specific target mRNAs. The in vivo relevance of repression of targets of gammaherpesvirus miRNAs remains highly elusive. Here, we identified a murine gammaherpesvirus miRNA as critical for in vivo infection and validated the host mRNA EWSR1 (Ewing sarcoma breakpoint region 1) as the predominant target for this miRNA. Using a novel technology, we demonstrated that repression of EWSR1 was essential for in vivo infection of the critical B cell reservoir. Murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV68) provides a robust virus-host system to dissect the in vivo function of conserved gammaherpesvirus genetic elements. We identified here MHV68 mghv-miR-M1-7-5p as critical for in vivo infection and then validated host EWSR1 (Ewing sarcoma breakpoint region 1) as the predominant target for this miRNA. Using novel, target-specific shRNA-expressing viruses, we determined that EWSR1 repression in vivo was essential for germinal center B cell infection. These findings provide the first in vivo demonstration of the biological significance of repression of a specific host mRNA by a gammaherpesvirus miRNA

    Evaluation of the available animal models for Bartonella infections

    The diseases caused by the Bartonella genus of bacteria are clinically diverse, and can be challenging to cure. The study of bartonellosis has been hampered by the lack of a suitable animal model. Preclinical studies for novel therapeutics and a competent host for vector transmission studies are needed to fill critical knowledge gaps. The studies included here are a representation of in vivo Bartonella research and the corresponding challenges. This review examines the current state of available animal models by assessing the success of various model species and strains in Bartonella infection. With a focus on the strengths and weaknesses of current animal models, the importance of these models for improvement of human health and veterinary care is emphasized

    This paper focuses on aspect in a comprehensive approach to promoting the responsible, ethical use of technology, organization design to ensure that the people are creating, deploying and using technology are motivated and equipped to make ethical choices. While certain foundational ethical risks can be mitigated through the establishment of clear operational rules, many others require the capacity for ethical judgement and organizational factors that support translating that judgement into action. As technology is increasingly incorporated into the daily operations of companies across sectors, leaders must prepare their people to be aware of the ethical risks posed by emerging tools, equip them to make ethical choices even in situations in which information is imperfect or ambiguous, and motivate them to act upon that judgement in ways that advance prosocial goals. -edited from the paper\u27s forward
